About Us!

Welcome to #feetofclay!

We are a group of sculptors who mold things into other things! Polymer, sculpey, bread dough, marble, what have you. If it's three-dimensional and and you used your hands to make it, you belong here, to share your wares with others.

We have only a few rules here!
  • It must be something made into something else! Clay made into a sculpture, dough made into a cake, pumpkin made into an jack-o-lantern. Go wild!

  • We do not accept several different deviations of the same object, just at different angles. Please submit the best deviation OR a larger deviation mural of different angles. Subsequent submissions will not be approved.

What does the name mean? Disney Legend Mary Blair was famously quoted for saying that no work of art can be perfect, and one of her Easter Eggs displaying this theory is the mystical five-legged goat on a huge mural at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Florida. Having "feet of clay" is a slight nod to that philosophy, and according to thefreedictionary.com, "if you say that someone you admire has feet of clay, you mean they have hidden faults. 'Some of the greatest geniuses in history had feet of clay.'"

So, no, Patrick Stewart probably isn't going to look at my clay sculpture of Jean-Luc Picard and wonder if he's looking in a mirror, but it was fun to make, and making things makes me happy.

If you feel the same way, please join this group and spread the awesome sculptures to the community!
Hallo, all!

~iwantcandy2 and ~TheBugKing have done a great job as co-founders, contributing great works of clay art, but I thought it was time to introduce a few new faces into the ranks.

If you'd like to be considered for the position, please leave a comment below as to what you think you could bring to the group!

Your duties would include:

  • Approving submissions (and making sure they follow our loose guidelines)

  • Finding clay works by others and submitting them for approval by the artist

  • Occasionally writing clay-related blogs about techniques or art features

All are welcome to apply, and I can't do this alone! Join today!

I'm an Associate Professor of Art Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. My research over the past 7 years has involved explorations of art learning in online (fan) communities. I'm currently conducting a nation-wide survey of the art knowledge, learning and sharing experiences of adolescents and young adults in traditional school and online settings. The study is supported by the National Art Education Association Foundation (NAEA / NAEF) and provides human subject protection through Indiana University IRB. Responses to the survey are confidential.

If you are between the ages of 16-24 and create art that you share on DeviantArt, PLEASE Participate in this survey. You can access it through this link:

o_O Why do you have to be a contributor to add art to the group? Isn't that what the admin voting system is for? What is the benefit of becoming a member over just devwatching?

That's a good question. Originally, it was to keep hordes of people from simply adding anything they came across (sculpture or not) in an attempt to get more visibility...

But since entry into the group is voted on anyway, the second step does seem redundant, huh? People could still abuse it simply by asking to be a contributor and secretly being a jerk.

Maybe I'll open it up and see how that goes!

It would be pretty simple to just police the entries instead.

Have the entries voted on. That way we can keep the stuff to sculpture only.
